Women, Language and Power with Susannah Baldwin, Ph.D.

Susannah Baldwin, Ph.D. is a Silicon Valley based executive and communications coach who combines her experience as a clinical psychologist with extensive corporate expertise to help clients hone the necessary skills to lead diverse teams in demanding environments.

Since 2010, Susannah has been focused on executive and communications coaching with a special focus on women’s advancement. Applying her research from clinical psychology, Susannah shows women how to recognize the ways in which their language choices undermine their own power, and instead align their language and communications choices with their power, ambition, and authority.

The Women, Language & Power presentation, led by executive and communications coach Susannah Baldwin, Ph.D., explores issues of gender, power, and the extraordinary role language plays in inhibiting or unleashing women’s potential to be effective and powerful in the business world. Susannah will explore the social conditioning that results in women modifying their speaking to always be collaborative, contain their bodies and voices, and put others' needs before their own - minimizing their effectiveness in the workplace. This session focuses on how women can make new language choices that connect them to their power, themselves, and their goals.

During the evening, Susannah will discuss three key takeaways:

1) Women will understand the three areas of social conditioning that have shaped women’s speaking styles in ways that dilutes their effectiveness.

2) Women will understand the common ways they modify their speaking to sound more collaborative and inclusive, so they can begin to remove those modifiers as a habit and only use them intentionally.

3) Women will learn one tool for ordering information when making an assertion that results in a clearer, more direct, and authoritative communication.
